The Spring Equinox: A Time to Reflect, Celebrate New Beginnings & Sow Seeds!

The spring equinox is one of those moments in the year that feels both quiet and profound. It's that magical moment when day and night are perfectly balanced, and the earth seems to take a deep breath in anticipation of all the growth to come. For me, it’s always a reminder that no matter how long the winter, the light will always return. It’s a time for renewal and, in many ways, a time to reconnect with ourselves as we embrace the shift toward brighter days.

On the farm, it’s the most noticeable change. The lengthening of the days signals to the plants that it’s time to wake up. They begin to respond to the increasing light levels, subtly at first, with shoots poking through the soil and buds swelling on branches. For flowers and plants, the equinox is the moment when everything starts to speed up. The extended hours of daylight give them the energy they need to begin the process of photosynthesis in full force, and with it, they begin to grow faster, stronger, and more vigorously

The earth has been quietly resting during winter, and now it’s coming alive again—awakening not just the plants but also our own energy, our creativity, and our potential. As we move towards more sunlight, there’s a sense of optimism in the air, a feeling that anything is possible. That’s why the equinox feels like such a significant turning point. It’s a symbolic threshold, a reminder that we, too, can shift and grow.

So, how can we celebrate the spring equinox? The answer lies in simplicity and presence. You don’t need grand gestures or elaborate rituals; sometimes, it’s about slowing down and soaking in the natural world around us. I love to spend time outside on the equinox, feel the warmth of the sun on my skin (hopefully!), and notice how everything around me is responding to the changing light. You might plant a new flower, sow seeds or herb, start a small garden, or simply enjoy a quiet walk in nature. It’s a perfect time to reflect on your intentions for the months ahead, to set new goals, or just appreciate how far you’ve come.

In many cultures, the spring equinox is celebrated with festivals, feasts, and rituals designed to honour the return of the sun and the growth it brings. It’s a time of balance and harmony, so if you feel inspired, you could light a candle in the evening, as a symbolic gesture of welcoming more light into your life. Or, perhaps gather with friends or loved ones and share a meal or time in nature to mark the shift in the seasons.

Whatever way you choose to observe it, the equinox reminds us that we’re all part of a much larger cycle. The days are growing longer, the earth is coming alive, and we, too, can choose to step into this new season with open hearts and minds, ready for the next chapter of growth and possibility.

As the light increases, so too do the opportunities before us. Let’s embrace this moment and let it inspire us to bloom quietly, in our own unique ways, just like the flowers on the farm.
